How to get an ICBC Motorcycle license?

This depends on a number of things such as whether you have an existing full-privilege BC driver's license, you have less than 2 years driving experience or you are coming from another Province or Country.

The best way to check this out is on the ICBC website. Please contact us if you need further help determining what you need to do.

What level of riding ability do I need to take a course with The Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Training?

You need to have some riding experience, either gained through one of the Lower Mainland's riding schools or on your own you and should be able to demonstrate the use of the clutch, throttle, brakes, signalling and all other motorcycle controls.

Why should I take a course and not just ride with friends to gain experience?

One of the largest studies conducted on motorcycle accidents showed that 92% of all motorcycle riders involved in accidents were either self-taught or taught by friends or family members. Don't copy the bad habits of those you ride with but learn positive modern techniques that are widely accepted in the industry and not just 'someone's opinion'.

After taking lessons with us you will have been taught the knowledge and correct technical skills to become a responsible and safe motorcyclist.

I used to ride when I was younger so I know all I need!

Lots of us have ridden when we were younger and when young families came along or other life changes we stopped riding.  Now we have time to get another bike and like 'riding a bike' you never forget the basics. What has changed is that bikes may be more powerful than we remember, the volume of traffic on the roads will have definitely increased and we may have forgotten how to stop in an emergency as you can't just slam on the brakes like in a car.

If you take the Refresher / Advanced course with us we will update your skills to keep you safe on the roads of today and get more from your time on two wheels.

What BC driving license do I need to take a course with The Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Training?

The path to a BC Class 6 license varies depending on your current license status. At the very basic Level you need to have passed the Motorcycle Knowledge Test (see link to ICBC).

After you have this, depending on your other BC licence classifications you will be either able to ride with or without a supervisor with some restrictions.

The Shiny Side Up Motorcycle Training will assess what restrictions are applicable to your license and modify the training schedule accordingly.

Where can I buy the riding gear that I need?

Obviously you can buy from your favourite local (to you) store or online, but as a local Vancouver business I like to buy local and you will be hard pressed to find better prices than below.

Shiny Side Up has partnered with Vancouver based Modern Motorcycling &  Facebook to provide you even more unbeatable prices when you tell Aaron or Russ that  "English Roy sent you!"
